That free beach day at Tahoe might soon come with a price tag. The U.S. Forest Service is proposing new or increased recreation fees at roughly 40 sites around the Lake Tahoe Basin, and the plan is not going over well with the people who live there.
The NY Post reported that Tahoe locals are vehemently opposed to the proposal, which lands as the basin absorbs record crowds, rising parking fines and a summer of tension between residents and visitors. Long-free favorites like Kiva Beach and Taylor Creek are among the spots that would start charging for the first time.
The Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit is also teaming up with the Eldorado National Forest on higher overnight permit prices for Desolation Wilderness, one of the most heavily used wilderness areas in the country. Under that plan, per-person overnight fees would double from 5 to 10 dollars, then climb to 15 dollars by the fifth year, while the 20 dollar annual pass disappears entirely.
Nothing is final yet. A public comment period runs through September 29, with feedback accepted by mail, email and an online portal before a citizens advisory committee reviews the plan and sends a recommendation to the regional forester.
