BEES! Folsom Lake trails and others - worst year ever!

9/19/2016

Picture
Ground nesting bees are at their highest population in the early fall before the first cold weather, and this year they seem to be especially  bad. Bees have been especially active on the Pioneer Express trail and the beach trails at Folsom Lake SRA. Three groups of horses and riders were attacked over the weekend in two different areas: one by Beeks Bight and the other a bit farther north. The first group of riders were attacked when three illegal off-leash dogs stirred up the nest off the trail. Another reason to keep all dogs on a leash. All riders and horses are OK.

Other areas where trail users have been attacked is around the Gold Country Trails Council Equestrian Trailhead on Hwy. 20, but there are reports from everywhere this past month. Every trail could have ground bees that can easily be set off to attack whatever the bees think you are threatening their home.

What to do? RUN. Get away as quickly as possible from the bee's nest and fewer bees will attack. Prevention? Carry Benedryl liquid AND gel or cream with you this time of year. If you get more than a few stings, your body's immune system is its worst enemy. Liquid Benedryl works as quickly as possible, and Benedryl gel or cream on the stings will take the hurt and redness away. If you feel cold, light headed, numb or can't breathe , IMMEDIATELY call 9-1-1. Bee venom is normally not dangerous, but if you have multiple stings, your body can react. If you know you are allergic, carry both EpiPens and use them when needed.
