They ended up raising nearly $7,500 — and donated the funds to Nevada County Habitat for Humanity and Animal Save earlier this month.
“We have been talking about this for a while and when I turned 60 in January, I decided this was the year to do it,” Margaretich, a realtor at Grass Valley’s RE/MAX Performance for 31 years, told The Union in August.
With their dogs Katie and Oscar as companions, the couple departed from the Sonora Pass Trailhead in the Stanislaus National Forest.
“Our hike was 10 days with a one-day layover at Lost Lakes,” Mary Margaretich wrote in an email. “We started at Sonora Pass and went to Echo Lakes. It was a fabulous trip and very challenging. Lots of elevation change. Our highest point was 10,500 feet. We would go between 8,000 and 9,800 feet.”
The couple ended up raising $7,485 via a GoFundMe campaign, with 88 donors in all.
Margaretich thanked all the donors for their generosity, including Linda Johnson, the owner of North Star Trucking, John & Teresia Renwick, the owners of ReMax Performance, Kevin Mento of Signet Home Inspections, John and Suzanne Voter of Alpine Mortgage Planning, First American Title Company, Ethan Brizzi and Placer Title Company.
