A confirmed Mountain Lion sighting today from Park Watch Report.com: a runner with her two dogs left Sterling Pointe Equestrian Staging in Loomis toward Peregrine Trail. At the start of Peregrine, the dogs left their owner and ran towards the two large boulders at the top of the trail, and as the runner was calling them trying to get them back, she saw a Mountain Lion right at the boulders. The lion then disappeared into the bushes, and the last thing she saw was its long tail. The runner left the Peregrine Trail and at the Y went north on the main Pioneer Express connector trail, calling her dogs to come back to her. Within a a few minutes the dogs returned to her. One dog was injured with lacerations down to the muscle and definite puncture marks. She returned to the staging area and then took her dog to the vet where the vet determined the dog had been bitten and clawed by what he assumed was a Mountain Lion.
This is the third sighting this year of a Mountain Lion in this area.
Most lions are very secretive and non-confrontational, but mother cats can become aggressive defending their cubs. Hikers, bikers and runners, be aware and careful, keep your dogs on leash, don't go alone, and avoid trails at dawn and at dusk when the lions are on the move. In California, there has never been a documented lion attack on a horse with a rider aboard, but there has been one report of a lion tracking and following horses on the Pioneer Express Trail.
