Folsom Lake SRA Trail Use policy and list of each trail with use explained, and bicycle safety rules.

California State Parks Gold Fields District, which covers both Auburn SRA and Folsom Lake SRA, established a new Trail Use Policy to put it in line with the statewide California State Parks. In that policy and resolution, it states, "Unless designated by the Department, all trails are open to pedestrians and closed to all other uses. All allowable trail uses will continue as they are designated at the date of adoption of these regulations unless and until a change is made by order of the Superintendent. The Department may establish speed limited for designated trail use for units or portions thereof, these speed limits will be posted."

This simply means that all trails will be open to pedestrians, and if signed open to bikes and/or horses, it will be stated open to those uses. As this policy is implemented, you will see no more new "No Bikes" or "No Horses" signs. If you don't see a sign that specifically states the trail is open to you, it is closed. At this time, we are in the interim between the two policies, so existing allowable trail use will continue.

As to the safety and speed limits for bikes: "No person shall operate a bicycle in such a way to endanger hikers, equestrians or others using State Park Property. No person what operate a bicycle within Folsom Sector of the Gold Fields District at a greater speed than is reasonable and prudent, no in any event in excess of 15 MPH per hour. No person shall operate a bicycle in excess of 5 miles per hour when passing hikers or equestrians or when approaching and negotiating a blind turn."
