Hiking is an especially good activity in the winter when for weeks our trails are fragile. We have many good hiking groups that can encourage you to get outside and enjoy our lovely trails. Click here to access Mother Lode Trails Hiking Club LINKS page to see the hiking groups in our area.
Here is just one example of a fun hike with a good group!
FOLK TRAILS HIKING CLUB - Scotts Flat Ramp to Ramp Trail
Feb. 24, 2017  10:00 am
"Today, the mining camp of Scotts Flat is under water, trees are growing up to cover the hydraulic mining scars, and Scotts Flat Lake is a recreation area. But in the late 1840's a group of Scottish immigrants, settled in this flat valley about 6 miles upstream from Nevada City. We'll walk across the dam built in 1948 and enlarged to its current size in 1964. We'll learn about the history of the lake while enjoying the natural environs.
If we are lucky, we'll see an Osprey or Bald Eagle!
Where to park: The turn out on Pasquale Road
Directions: Exit Broad Street, turn right and continue up Boulder Street, slight right onto Red Dog, stay to the right, until your reach Quaker Hill take a left, continue on Quaker Hill into Cascade Shores. At the four way stop near the Cascade Shores store turn left on Pasquale Rd, continue on this road until you come to a gated PG&E dirt road pull out. There are PortaPotties and a significant area to park your car.
Total: 6 miles round trip, with a slight decline at the beginning and incline at the end.
Bring appropriate hiking shoes, water, and snacks if needed. Dress in layers. Bring binoculars if you have them!"
